Rwanda is famously known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," but the heart of its story is much more than a beautiful backdrop. This is a country that has rebuilt itself with purpose, where Kigali’s leafy boulevards buzz with creativity, and the opportunity to meet mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park is among travel’s most moving moments. Akagera’s rolling savanna brings the Big Five back to life in a restored wilderness.
A visit to Rwanda is a blend of culture and adventure: wander through moving museums and vibrant markets in Kigali, join a trek beneath the ancient canopy of Nyungwe Forest, or experience the quiet connection of a gorilla encounter. This is a place defined by transformation and intention: it is Africa’s invitation to travelers seeking depth, beauty, and meaning.
Need to Know

Rwanda is recognized as one of Africa’s safest destinations, with community cleanups and a spirit of hospitality found everywhere. Expect to drink bottled water, and note that many businesses close on the last Saturday of the month for Umuganda, the nation’s cleanup day.
Currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF); cards are widely accepted in cities, while cash is best for smaller purchases.
Kinyarwanda is the primary language, with English and French common in Kigali and around attractions.
Arrivals enter through Kigali (KGL), with flights linking much of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
Taxis are easy in Kigali, but regional travel means hiring a guide, or in some cases, a helicopter.
Signature Dishes & Drinks

Rwandan cuisine is wholesome and rooted in the land. Try isombe (cassava stew), grilled brochettes, succulent tilapia from Lake Kivu, fresh coffee, and urwagwa, the local banana beer. Fruit juices and spiced teas are found everywhere and reflect Rwanda’s lush climate.
Travel Tips
Visa on arrival is available for most visitors, and the East Africa Tourist Visa is ideal for trips combining Kenya and Uganda. Bring layers for cool evenings, smart-casual clothes for Kigali, sturdy shoes and neutral outfits for trekking. Rwanda bans plastic bags and maintains strict environmental protections, expect security checks and clear signage. Gorilla trekking is highly regulated with strict distancing and hygiene rules for meaningful and ethical animal encounters. High elevation means acclimatization is important; hydrate as you explore.
